Out-of-the-box thinking. That's where every Volkswagen begins.

Although some ideas are more out of the box than the market is ready for, there are always those precious concepts which are turned into reality - as thoroughly innovative, technologically advanced, under-the-skin German engineered vehicles on the road. Concept cars give our engineers a blank canvas on which to think freely; to experiment; to test the boundaries of existing performance and safety technologies and take them to new levels.

CONCEPT A
At the Geneva Auto Salon, Volkswagen unveiled the world's first TSI engine (twincharger) powered by natural gas (CNG). Driven by a highly efficient 1.4 litre TSI-CNG engine, Concept A is a cross between a sports car and SUV distinguished by a powerful and aesthetic design with excellent all round features.

Doubled charged via compressor and turbo, the engine outputs an impressive amount of power - with 110 kW and reaching its maximum torque at 220 Nm, and every hundred kilometres averages a mere 5 kg of natural gas. One of the positive effects: the CO2 balance of TSI-CNG engines improves by another 20 to 25 percent when compared to fuel driven TSIs. Furthermore the TSI+CNG presents itself as an important stepping stone towards a mobility technology en route to becoming independent from crude oil. Through conversion from natural gas to synthetic fuel (gas-to-liquids) for instance Synfuel is produced. It is an environmentally benign, bio-degradable fuel which - among other things - allows the mentioned CCS hybrid combustion process.

But the Concept A is not only clean, sporty and economical. It boasts a progressive design philosophy too. A new 3D crest radiator grille made out of brushed aluminium forms a congenial yet confident appearance. The "face" is well known, just not on an automobile (reflecting the mirror image of a cheetah). The silhouette shows the lines of a coupe. The front and rear doors open facing each other. The carriage overhangs are briskly short, the hood long, the C columns one of a kind. 20 inch alloy rims and 295 tyres fill out the space in the distinctively extended wheelhouses.

Concept A also wears the intensive blue colour shade of semi transparent glacier formations. Mixed-in glass flakes increase the depth of the paint built up in the piano lacquer technique. The rear part, with its athletic flanks, imparts a strong elegance. The hatchback is made of two parts; the area under the rear lights lifts up like a pick- up loading surface and thus creates a lot of room for big items. At the bottom the motor exhales via two round chrome pipes. The interior itself is spacious and open. Light and air dominate the inner feel, and if needed, a large soft top can be attached all the way back to the C column.

Concept A - powerful, beautiful and just around the corner.

NEW MICROBUS
Volkswagen has just announced that the Volkswagen Microbus, which captured the imagination of the media and car designers worldwide when it was shown in concept form at the Detroit Auto Show in January 2001, is to go into production.  By deciding to build the Microbus, Volkswagen has set its sights on a new segment - a MPV combining striking design and high functionality with the comfort of a limousine. 50 years ago the first Volkswagen bus left the production line and it is now returning to Hanover.

Concept R
The Concept R roadster is a motoring innovation that's set to lead the way into the future. Its linear looks automatically identify it as a Volkswagen, but the sharply set lines give it a more impressive three- dimensional shape. While inside the cockpit, clear aesthetics and functional logic captivate the driver. With such a sleek athletic shape, it's one of the most sexy and desirable sports cars ever designed.

The Concept R is a stylishly bold car. Navigation, the audio system, running gear and your cellphone are controlled through a Multi Media Interface (MMI) on the centre console, complemented by advanced LED technology and a chrome dashboard that adjusts to better fit the driver. Then there is the 6-speed direct selection gearbox and V6 mid-engine - with 195kW of power and a top speed of 270 km/h, it easily reaches 100 km/h in 5.3 seconds. Add to this the enhanced seating luxury of deer leather and easy-to-use instruments that respond to your every need.

Take a classic low-slung racing car, give it dynamic technology, mind-blowing features and elegant flowing lines, and you have the Volkswagen Concept R - the next step.

EURO RACER
Volkswagen is presenting a prototype that could well make history as the most economical sports car of its time. Its basic data: average fuel consumption of 3.4 litres for 100 km, a top speed of 230 km/hr. Its name: EcoRacer. Thanks to its carbon-fibre (CFP) bodywork, this sports car weighs in at only 850 kilograms, and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/hr in just 6.3 seconds. Powered by a newly developed 100 kW turbo-charged diesel engine of the next generation, it offers a forward-looking synthesis of austere economy and impressive performance. Surprisingly, the objective of development was not to break records, but rather to create a research vehicle that united the elements of economy and performance under one stylish roof.

Tight proportions: The styling of the bodywork, with its new sports-car front end, LED headlamp and rear-light systems and powerful lines, demonstrates that even very economical cars can attract attention wherever they appear.

Fully functional: The EcoRacer is a versatile all-rounder: as soon as a door is opened, the roof wing above it swings up, giving optimal access. The entire T-bar roof is removable. Even the rear hatch can be removed. And, last but not least, the frame of the windscreen can be exchanged for a module with a short, racing windshield. This makes the EcoRacer, firstly, a coupé, secondly, a roadster and, thirdly, a speedster.

CFP bodywork: As the mainstay of the EcoRacer, a CFP (carbon-fibre reinforced plastic) bodywork was developed that was both light and stiff. Structurally, it is a CFP polycoque (the safety structure embraces room for two persons) with roll bar, CFP crash elements and a CFP skin. The bonnet, boot-lid and doors are also made of CFP, as are the roof elements

A coupé: The door locks of the EcoRacer open electromechanically. This not only releases the door catch - via Keyless-Entry-and-Go system - but also swings the associated roof wing, so as to optimise the entry and exit. These roof sections and the so-called T-bar, can be removed completely and stowed behind the seats.

A roadster: In a matter of minutes, the entire roof structure including the windows can be removed or converted. At the same time, the side elements of the front wings between the front wheel and the door hinge are taken out. The effect of the partially free-standing tyres has dynamics all of its own.

A speedster: A special catch in the area of the A column is simply released, to allow the windscreen with frame and the upper dashboard housing to be taken off. In place of this module, a minimalistic windscreen with its own dashboard cover is inserted. The result is a speedster in its purest form.

Add to this futuristic styling elements, a light and athletic running gear, and new-generation TDI engines ( that can develop 100 kW / 136 PS at 4000 rpm), and you have a car that's almost too good to be true.
